Why flower photography?

Well, I guess the response to this should be "Why not flower photography?"

I got my first DSLR camera back in the winter of 2010.  I was keen to start taking pictures of stunning landscapes and sunsets and beaches etc etc! But in the depth of winter in the north of England none of these were really going to be possible. Also, the weather is generally poor and so this aim was never really going to happen.

So, I started just wandering around my back garden taking pictures of grass and leaves and twigs! Not very inspirational but at least it got me used to using the camera (Canon 500D) and working out what it could do. Then, as we moved into spring and the garden started to become alive, the possibilities for photography started to increased dramatically. I started to realise that taking photographs of things that were already in my back garden and easily accessible made way more sense (most of the time) than getting in the car and travelling for miles to capture mountains and sunsets! Also, I started buying interesting plants and flower and planting them in the garden to provide more interesting subjects to photograph. And so my interest in 'flower photography' began - and the rest, as they say, is history!

Flowers provide a vast array of different colours and forms and lend themselves beautifully to to being photographed. I have always tried to capture colourful and slightly unusual images of flowers. I am keen to share the things I have learnt since I started back in 2010 with others so that they may enjoy the art of flower photography and gain as much pleasure from this hobby as I have.
